About the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau
The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, recognized as one of the leading hospitals in Spain, has pioneered new technologies and precision and personalized medicine. Three years ago, the hospital decided to invest in the integration of Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality in its clinical practice. This project has been led by Abdel Hakim Moustafa, a doctor specializing in Cardiology, to whom we are grateful for the trust placed in Invelon.
A need to improve precision in surgeries by integrating immersive technologies in the medical sector.
Currently, 4.0 technologies are such an important tool in medicine as they help improve certain aspects of diagnosis, optimize some treatments, and facilitate the management of medical data.
The benefits of Virtual and Mixed Reality are tangible at the clinical level. Surgery becomes more precise, with fewer complications and better overall surgical outcomes, leading to shorter procedure times and faster recovery for the patient. In addition, this technology empowers the patient by allowing them to better understand their disease and actively participate in making decisions about their treatment.
Our solution and technological contribution
In this context, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau relied on our Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technology solutions.
From the cardiology department, this technology began to be used in various applications, including intervention planning, patient empowerment, and simulation for surgical resident training. Currently, the project is in the expansion phase of being implemented in all the hospital areas.
The Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality integration process begins with the creation of a digital model from the patient's tests, performed by the team of medical imaging specialists. This virtual 3D model is then generated for subsequent visualization in Mixed Reality devices, such as the HoloLens 2, and in Virtual Reality devices, such as the Meta Quest. These devices allow the medical professional, the medical engineer, and the patient to meet in the same space to facilitate the patient's understanding of the pathology and its treatment.
“The integration of Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality at Hospital Sant Pau has revolutionized our clinical practice. These technologies have allowed us to move towards more personalized and cutting-edge medical care, improving outcomes and the overall patient experience.”

The result: improved surgical precision, empowerment of patients, and easier understanding of their pathologies.
Thanks to the implementation of this combination of technologies, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has been able to provide more accurate and personalized planning of surgical procedures. These technologies have also facilitated specialized training for physicians, providing access to advanced content and hands-on simulations that enhance their technical skills and decision-making abilities in complex clinical settings.
Collaboration with Invelon has been essential for this project's development since it has allowed the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau access to innovative technologies that complement its capabilities.
In addition, the combination of technical and clinical expertise has strengthened the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, which has generated positive results in both operational efficiency and patient experience.
Benefits of this collaboration
- Improved surgical precision: The technologies implemented enable more accurate and personalized planning of interventions, reducing margins of error and optimizing surgical outcomes.
- Patient empowerment: Patients have access to visual representations of their conditions, allowing them to better understand their health and actively participate in decision-making about their treatment.
- Improved medical education: These new technologies facilitate a constant learning environment for healthcare professionals, which contributes to the development of their competencies and skills over time.
- Fostering critical thinking and problem-solving: The integration of tools such as VR encourages clinicians to adopt a more analytical and reflective approach to clinical decision-making, improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: The combination of technical and clinical expertise strengthens the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, promoting more coordinated, personalized and effective care.
- Optimization of time and resources: Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality allow for more accurate and efficient planning of hospital resources, reducing surgery times and improving operational efficiency.
