About the project and the city council of Burgos
The initiative was launched with the goal of bringing the city’s historical, artistic, and cultural heritage to a wide range of audiences through virtual reality experiences designed to transform the way people discover and understand history.
Through three immersive tours, visitors can take a virtual journey to some of Burgos’s most iconic moments and sites: the Atapuerca archaeological sites, the city’s medieval origins, and the figure of El Cid Campeador.
The project combines historical accuracy, audiovisual storytelling, and technological accessibility to offer an educational and emotional experience tailored to both domestic and international audiences.
The need to transform historical education into an immersive experience
The City Council of Burgos faced the challenge of bringing some of the most significant episodes and sites of its heritage to life in a way that is innovative, accessible, and appealing to today’s visitors.
- Accessing hard-to-visit sites: part of Burgos’s historical value lies in spaces with limited access or whose complexity makes them difficult for visitors to understand, such as certain areas of Atapuerca or the urban evolution of the medieval city.
- Reaching new audiences: the project had to offer an experience capable of capturing the interest of a wide range of audiences—from tourists and families to young people and educational institutions—using formats more in line with current digital habits.
- Bringing together heritage and technology: the city needed a flexible, portable technological solution that integrated education, entertainment, and historical accuracy without relying on a fixed installation or specific physical space conditions.
- Create a self-contained and scalable experience: the experience had to function independently, with automated workflows, language management, and a structure adaptable to different locations and future needs.
Our solution and technological contribution
At INVELON, we have designed and developed a comprehensive immersive experience based on Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality, conceived to transform a cultural visit into an interactive journey through time.
The experience places the visitor at the Castle Lookout, reinterpreted as a narrative portal from which to access various historical tours through an immersive interface inspired by the Compass Rose.
Three experiences, one common thread
The solution integrates three independent thematic tours:
- The secrets of Atapuerca: a virtual exploration of the Cueva Mayor and the Sima de los Huesos, providing visual access to one of the most important sites for understanding human evolution.
- The medieval origins of Burgos: a narrative and visual reconstruction of the city’s urban development from its founding through the 16th century.
- El Cid and his ballad: an evocative experience inspired by the Song of El Cid, where visitors discover key passages from the work through animations and immersive projections.
A Self-Guided and Accessible Experience
The solution has been designed to operate without physical controls, using hand gestures to enhance accessibility and reduce technological barriers for visitors. It also includes:
- Multilingual options (Spanish, English, French, and German).
- Automatic app restart.
- Continuous visitor flow.
- Session-based time management.
- Adaptability to different physical spaces.
The result: a new way to discover Burgos
The result is an immersive experience designed to bring the history of Burgos to life in a visual, accessible, and emotional way.
Using virtual reality devices, visitors can explore different historical periods through guided narratives, 3D reconstructions, and interactive environments specifically designed to showcase the city’s heritage.
