THE NEED

Breaking down digital and intergenerational barriers

INVELON has carried out a comprehensive Virtual Reality project of social engagement for the Spanish Red Cross, with the aim of enabling groups of older people to discover VR and enjoy, through in-person, experiential workshops, exploring immersive and cultural environments without physical barriers.

Through these workshops, the Spanish Red Cross promotes digital inclusion and offers unique experiences to groups who may have limited accessibility or mobility.

The project also aims to bring immersive technology to all audiences, break down the technological barrier and the generation gap, ensuring that older people can also enjoy immersive Virtual Reality experiences.

“We want people to approach new technologies with confidence and discover how virtual reality can open up new possibilities for them, allowing them to live experiences that, because of their circumstances, might otherwise be out of reach, such as travelling and getting to know other places.”

OUR SOLUTION

Hardware and software, with the added hand tracking layer

INVELON provided a deployment of 10 Meta Quest 3S headsets, along with a variety of cultural experiences developed in-house by INVELON, optimised with hand tracking technology.

In selecting the experiences, we took into account that the user's experience had to be simple and at the same time highly satisfying, adapted to their level of technological knowledge and their usual lack of familiarity with this type of technology.

For this reason, the selected experiences were of a carefully calibrated technical difficulty and, in addition, INVELON took an active part in running the workshops, being present in person, accompanying and energising the groups, ensuring the breaking down of the technological barrier and of the intergenerational digital divide.

“Seeing the delight of an 87-year-old after trying a Virtual Reality experience in the Spanish Red Cross workshops reminds us of XR's potential to open up new opportunities for learning, inclusion and enjoyment at any age. That delight gives meaning to our work and encourages us to keep promoting, at INVELON, technology at the service of people.”

THE RESULT

A project with human and social impact

The initiative was received extremely positively, creating moments of great emotion among attendees, many of whom experienced and learned about Virtual Reality for the first time and expressed a wish to do it again.

For INVELON, projects like this have a special added value because of their inclusive and human dimension, perfectly reflecting our vision of technology as a tool that makes very diverse experiences accessible to all audiences, breaking down barriers and democratising its use.

This project demonstrated the effectiveness of Virtual Reality as a tool for stimulation, learning and leisure for older people.

"Seeing the delight and surprise of older people when they put on a virtual reality headset for the first time has been a very enriching experience. These workshops have shown that technology can become a tool to stimulate curiosity, encourage participation and generate new learning and enjoyment experiences at any age. For the Red Cross, initiatives like this are an opportunity to keep bringing innovation closer to people and to move towards real, barrier-free digital inclusion."
