The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a benchmark in Spain, has been a pioneer in adopting new technologies and in precision and personalised medicine.

Three years ago, the hospital decided to commit to integrating Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality into its clinical practice, a project led by Abdel Hakim Moustafa, a specialist physician in Cardiology, whom we thank for the trust placed in INVELON.

THE NEED

Improving surgical precision

Today, 4.0 technologies are very important in medicine because they help improve certain aspects of diagnosis, optimise some treatments and make medical data easier to manage.

The benefits of Virtual and Mixed Reality are tangible at clinical level. Surgery becomes more precise, with fewer complications and better surgical outcomes overall, which means shorter procedures and a faster recovery for the patient. In addition, this technology empowers patients by allowing them to better understand their illness and take an active part in decisions about their treatment.

THE SOLUTION

Our technological contribution

The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau trusted our Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technology solutions.

The cardiology department began using this technology in a variety of applications, including planning interventions, empowering patients and simulation for training surgical residents. The project is currently being expanded so that it can be implemented across all areas of the hospital.

The integration process begins with the creation of a digital model from the patient's tests, carried out by the team of medical imaging specialists. This virtual 3D model is generated for later viewing on XR devices. These devices allow the medical professional, the medical engineer and the patient to meet in the same space, with the aim of helping the patient to understand their condition and its treatment.

THE RESULT

Empowering patients

Thanks to the implementation of this combination of technologies, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau has been able to offer more precise, personalised planning of surgical interventions. These technologies have also facilitated the specialised training of doctors, providing access to advanced content and practical simulations that improve their technical skills and their ability to make decisions in complex clinical settings.

The collaboration with INVELON has been essential to the development of this project, as it has allowed the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau to access innovative technologies that complement its capabilities.

In addition, the combination of technical and clinical knowledge has strengthened the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, which has produced positive results in both operational efficiency and the patient experience.

THE BENEFITS

Improved surgical precision

The technologies implemented allow more accurate, personalised planning of interventions, reducing margins of error and optimising surgical outcomes.

Patient empowerment
Patients have access to visual representations of their conditions, which lets them better understand their health and take an active part in decisions about their treatment.

Improved medical training
The implementation of new technologies creates a constant learning environment for healthcare professionals, contributing to the development of their competencies and skills over time.

Fostering critical thinking and problem solving
Integrating tools such as VR encourages doctors to take a more analytical and reflective approach to clinical decision-making, improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment.

Interdisciplinary collaboration
Combining technical and clinical knowledge strengthens the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, promoting more coordinated, personalised and effective care.

Optimising time and resources
Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality allow more precise and efficient planning of hospital resources, reducing surgery times and improving operational efficiency.
